Josiane Berube

We chat to Josiane, an information management technician from Quebec.

This week we chat to my subscriber Josiane Bérubé, an information management technician and part-time cupcake business owner from Gatineau, Québec in Canada.

Josiane discovered me at the end of the spring while looking for new crafty projects. She loves any books by Patrick Sénécal, her boyfriend is her hero and her favourite possession is her pet bulldog, named Roméo.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a vet because I love animal so much. And my dream job would be having my own company, being my own boss, and doing that full time! I already have my own Cupcakes business but it's only part time (Life is sweet cupcakes et sucreries, on FB)

Where should we visit if we come to your town?

Definitely you have to go by Gatineau Park, it is huge and perfect for any bike or hiking lover. I do a lot of cycling over there. And also you have to go by the Bytown market area in Ottawa for all the shops, restaurants and art gallery. And last, if you go in the winter time we have the longest skate way in the way, it's on Rideau Canal and you can eat a delicious Beavertails at the same time :)

Where do you look for inspiration?

When I look for inspiration I go a lot online on interest to find new blogs to follow, also tumblr for everything and Lookbook.nu for fashion inspiration. I find anything street art very inspirational and easy to connect with.

"My dream job would be having my own company, being my own boss, and doing that full time!"

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

The best advice I ever got is to choose your battles. I'm still working on that, it's a very long process to achieve.

What would your three wishes be?

I would want more time in a day to do my never-ending "to do list". I would like to stop being so fussy about food and I would like to be able to travel more.

Hella de Boon

We chat to Hella, a crafty student from Rotterdam.

This week we get to know my subscriber Hella from The Netherlands.

Hella den Boon lives in a suburb about twenty minutes away from the center of Rotterdam, in The Netherlands. She is going to school but will have my final exams this year and found me about 5 months ago after joining Cut Out + Keep. Her heroes are Piet Mondrian and Audrey Hepburn, she listens to Red Hot Chili Peppers, Florence and the Machine, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, and her favourite possessions are her owl collection and a treasure box.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I always dreamed of being a mother, because I thought that that is kind of your job as being a woman. Nowadays I want to study Celtic language and find myself a job that fits that. I would love to have my own tearoom too. I hope that I can have both.

Where should we visit if we come to your town?

Rotterdam has beautiful skyline but for me the love for my hometown ends there. I would recommend an other part of the Netherlands, Drenthe, where you can find beautiful dolmens. I am going to live there one day.

Where do you look for inspiration?

I don't think you have to look for inspiration, inspiration comes to you. Wherever you are there are ideas in the air. You just have to open yourself and let them hit you. And if that doesn't happen, I visit blogs. Sometimes I find myself watching blogs all day and my list of projects is getting longer every hour.

"I don't think you have to look for inspiration, inspiration comes to you."

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

I am insecure about a lot of things and a good friend of me said to me that I should let it all go and I will find peace in my mind and I will feel perfectly happy about myself. It's kind of hard for me to do that but I am certain that it work if I open myself .

What would your three wishes be?

  1. I would wish that I could keep my friend close to forever. I am scared that we won't see each other again when we go to different universities. They are the best that is ever given to me and I can't imagine that there is a life without them.

  2. I would wish for a male friend. A kind of friend you don't do girl stuff with. Just sitting on the couch all night, eating a lot, drinking a lot, playing stupid and violent video games, watching the same kind of movies, yeah, I would love that.

  3. A house so big that I could store all my crafts and craft stuff in it. I already have figured out how my house should look and I'm certain that I need A LOT of space. Every piece in my house should be self made our from the sixties. That are my two obsessions and they fit perfectly together.

Cat Cliff

We chat to Cat, a mum & festival stall owner from South Shields, England!

This week we get to know my subscriber Cat from South Shields, England.

Cat Cliff lives in South Shields, North East England. She's a full time mum and small business owner who discovered me totally by accident six months ago online while searching for inspiration for her festival stall and subscribed due to the humorous tone and love of all things quirky. She's a bookworm, admires anyone who overcomes hard difficulties on their own merit and loves any movie with viking looking men in period clothing.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was young I used to watch back to back episodes of Time Team and was convinced I was going to be the next Tony Robinson. These days however I couldn't be happier than with what I do now, co-running a festival stall at mostly Pagan and fae related events, selling hand craft alternative items. Mainly customised dreadlocks and feather mohawks.

Where should we visit if we come to your town?

South Shields is known for it's beach, fish and chip shops, Indian restraunts and nightlife. Personally though, I think a trip to Arbeia Roman Fort, a walk along the coast and an ice cream at Minchella's ice cream parlor.

"I spend hours trawling the net looking for ideas I can recreate in an ecologically moral way."

Where do you look for inspiration?

I get inspired by a mixture of history and alternative and macabre, I'm a great fan of steampunk due to my love of Victorian fashion and I find inspiration in almost everything. I'm a great fan of craft websites and will spend hours trawling the net looking for ideas I can recreate in an ecologically moral way.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

Being nice doesn't mean you have to be a pushover and being assertive doesn't mean you have to be a bitch - I love my Mum and I think that it is a very good bit of advice, worthy of remembering.

What would your three wishes be?

1 - For my family and especially my little boy to have long happy healthy lives full of love and comfort.
2 - As cheesy as it sounds, I truly wish people would start treating the Earth with the respect it deserves and stop being so destructive and greedy.
3 - An end to all forms of child and animal abuse and at least actual real punishments for those who deserve it.

Check out Cat's Facebook page Medusa's Moon for custom dreadlocks, feather mohawks, Pagan items and ethical products.

Colleen Ly

We chat to Colleen, a student from Raleigh, North Carolina.

This week I get to know my subscriber Colleen, a design student in North Carolina.

Colleen Ly is a design student living in Raleigh, North Carolina. She discovered me after one of her friends introduced her to the marbled swirled nails on Cut Out + Keep. Her parents are her heroes as they're the strongest people she's ever known. She eats Mexican, Italian & Chinese food, her favourite colours are blue and purple (like a bruise) and her favourite book is Feed by M.T. Anderson.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was younger I dreamed I would be so many things.. I desperately wanted to be a pirate, or go live in the jungle, or be a ninja secret agent. My dream job today would be if I were an amazing glass artist who lived in the outskirts of Prague, CZ who could earn a living off my pieces and as a researcher at the Bee Institute that is about 40 miles north of Prague. I studied glass works for two months this past summer and fell in love with Prague and its' surrounding areas. I could sit by the river and stitch all day! It would be a dream to live the way the people I met there did.

Where should we visit if we come to your town?

If you came to visit my town, I'd take you to the Rock Quarry if you felt like splashing around in the swimming holes. Then we'd go downtown to grab some food at the Raleigh Times, which has awesome drink specials and the best chili cheese fries in town! We would probably go to Father & Son after that, since it would only be a few blocks down. It's a vintage thrift store I think you would like.

Where do you look for inspiration?

Inspiration usually comes from those around me, nature, and passing by strangers. Sometimes a nice gesture from a stranger can make your day! Being around other design students also inspire me to do better. I am surrounded by amazing artists, it's a wonderful environment to be in when I want to find inspiration. My top resources are some of my professors and fellow classmates, as well as a few blogs I follow.

"Go with that gut feeling! In the end you can never really regret what you wanted the most."

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

Go with that gut feeling! In the end you can never really regret what you wanted the most.

What would your three wishes be?

  • I wish I had a huge studio, on a boat.
  • I wish I had a magical sewing machine that didnt annoy me.
  • I wish I had a million more wishes!

Lea Joy Friedel

We chat to Lea Joy, an aspiring pin-up musician from Berlin!

This week we get to know my subscriber Lea Joy Friedel, a student from Berlin, Germany who dreams of becoming a successful musician and pin-up model one day.

Lea Joy discovered me when her favourite singer Emilie Autumn tweeted about us three years ago. Her favourite food is sushi, Freddie Mercury is her hero and the man she loves is her most favourite possession!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Since I was little I always wanted to be a musician and pin-up model. That’s what I’m still working on.

Where should we visit if we come to your town?

If you travel to Berlin, you will mostly see the tourist places. But if you want to skip this superficial experience and see what is like to live in this awesome town, I recommend areas like Kreuzberg/Neukölln. Here we have art, culture and the Berlin-typical relaxed atmosphere. Just walk through the streets and open your eyes and you will discover beautiful places.

"Follow your feelings, they will always show you the right way."

Where do you look for inspiration?

Music is my biggest inspiration. Secondly concerts, poems, people, conversations and the city.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

Follow your feelings, they will always show you the right way.

What would your three wishes be?

  1. Live my dreams with a multitalent career.
  2. Finding a man who really loves me.
  3. A constant state of feeling free and secure.

Simone Jaeger

This week we chat to Mone, a crafter and stay-at-home Mum from Berlin!

This week we get to know my subscriber Simone Jaeger who lives in Berlin, Germany.

Simone's friends call her Mone and she lives in Berlin, Germany, She is a crafter, who discovered me through Cut Out + Keep, and she is a stay-at home-Mum to a toddler with a second baby due in September. Her hero is her Granny, who raised her and her favourite possessions are a sewing machine and chest full of wool.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A gardener, because I grew up on a farm and my Dad was a gardener too. Today I dream about being able to make a living from my crafts.

Where should we visit if we come to your town?

Despite of all the famous sights, I would recommend a shopping trip to one of the many "Humana" (second hand shops), like the one located at Alexanderplatz. Then have a Berliner Weiße, which is a beer with syrup in Kreuzberg, one of the most creative parts of Berlin. And you don't want to miss seeing one of the many fleamarkets or craft fairs, that are all over Berlin. If you want to go sight seeing, two funny ways would be a safari in a Trabant, the famous east-German car or you can get on a boat on the Spree with a guide.

"I dream about being able to make a living from my crafts"

Where do you look for inspiration?

Cut Out + Keep, Pinterest and a lot of craft books which are written by other bloggers and crafters. Everyday life inspires me a lot and I always strive to make as much as possible for myself, that's why I make many different crafts and styles.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

"Tie your laces and keep going" - something my Granny often said when I was sad or struggled.

What would your three wishes be?

That my boys grow up happy, healthy and with lots of love in their lives.

Make sure to check out Mone's blog (written in German & English) which is filled with crafts, recipes and the concerts she goes to.

Ariel

We chat to Ariel, an animal lover and massage-therapist from Michigan!

This week we get to know my subscriber Ariel, a massage-therapist and crafter from around Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Ariel has been a member of CO+K since February 2011 which led her to my blog. She loves Instagram, Harry Potter, Good Charlotte and chocolate covered strawberries. One day, she hopes to be a student, her favourite colour is pink and her most prized possession is a doll of Woody from Toy Story.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was younger, I really wanted to be an animation artist for Disney. I actually have worked at Disney World since, but not in anything fancy like that! My dream job today changes a lot. It always stems around helping animals, and right now, it's working at zoos and museums to raise awareness for endangered species or helping them directly in the wild. I'd also love to be a paleontologist with a career focused on prehistoric environmental changes and the animals' adaptations, paralleling with today's endangered species.

Where should we visit if we come to your town?

Binder Park Zoo is a great little zoo in Battle Creek, MI. I especially love the red pandas and cheetahs. The office I work for did a fundraiser for them last year and will do the same this year. We were able to “adopt” three animals! For my last birthday, my mom offered me a pedicure or a “Zookeeper for a Day” program, and, of course, I chose the latter. It was a LOT of hard work, but it was a great experience!

"My dream job today changes a lot - it always stems around helping animals!"

Where do you look for inspiration?

I never really have a problem being inspired to create! I love to make stories come to life by making Harry Potter creations and other things like that. I have a plush Peeta doll from the Hunger Games I hand sewed out of felt. I have tons of clay characters like Harry, Ron, Hermione, Peter Pan, Wendy, Alice, the Caterpillar... My resources are definitely books, movies, and music. Harry Potter, the Hunger Games, Elixir, Stargirl, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Great Gatsby, Disney Princess movies, Toy Story and other Pixar movies, Good Charlotte, Big Time Rush, Hilary Duff's music...the list goes on quite a while.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

I've been picked on and bullied all my life, and my parents told me since I was young to do my own thing and not worry about what anybody else thinks.

What would your three wishes be?

I'm going to be honest- I'm taking a lot of time to answer this one! Obvious things are money, world peace, ending world hunger, no wars, and...more wishes!

1) Everyone to have a job that makes them happy. A job can truly make or break a person. It's what you do for most of your day for most of your life. Everyone has at least one thing that they can do spectacularly or one thing that makes them truly happy. I just wish that we could all get the education required and be able to do things well, day in and day out, happily, and get paid for it.

2) Everyone to properly understand each other's thoughts, feelings, and intentions. I truthfully believe that would end racism, sexism, and all arguments in the world.

3) Unlimited free travel accommodations for my friends, my family, and myself.

Ariel has just opened her first Etsy shop selling flower crowns, clay pendants, cards, and postcards. She also said to check out GalaDarling.com as her site has made a huge difference to her life!

Kerri Layton

We chat to Kerri, a performing artist from Lancaster, England!

This week we get to know my subscriber Kerri Layton, a drama teacher and performing artist from Lancaster, who is also the founder and director of the FAF Arts Street Theatre Co.

Kerri aka Laydee Layton aka Belle Du Voir first discovered me about a year ago after liking Cut Out + Keep. She said, "you looked like a girl after my own heart; loads of glitter, making amazing things out of recycled found objects and generally seeming like a full power girl whose following her dreams so I was inspired to subscribe to your updates and have enjoyed reading your posts." Her favourite colours are black and red, her hero is Caitlin Moran who wrote her favourite book ‘How to be a woman’ and her favourite possession is a blue tin kettle. She also has a pointless glow stick app on her phone, which makes her laugh when people shake their very expensive phones about.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be an artist! There was a brief spell of wanting to be an officer in the army or a police woman but given my politics these days I’m better off curating events. I’m actually doing my dream job! I’m an artist woohoo! I balance a hectic schedule between producing drama workshops and performing various characters- dancing for bands or running around in some mad costume on the street. I would really like to the lead singer of a high energy, sexy rock band too maybe this is the next dream to pursue!

Where should we visit if we come to your town?

ME! Come for a brew at FAF HQ! OR Lancaster Castle is quite nice, Williamsons Park too if the weather's good. I love heading into the hills in the Trough of Bowland or walking down the estuary with a view of the Lake District (it proper smells of sheep there and makes me feel so rural, I love it!)

"I’m actually doing my dream job! I’m an artist woohoo!"

Where do you look for inspiration?

OOO great question!!
1) I almost always start with music- go for a walk and listen to a track, let my mind wander and see what images, emotions and thoughts of movement come to me.
2) The second place is charity shops, car boots junk sales etc . I like to make stories from objects I find so I summon my shamanistic powers to guide my way through boxes of treasure. I actually think this is one of my super powers!
3) I meditate.
4) Books and pictures. I always make mood boards of concepts to guide the initial stages of a project, then, by this stage my mind will be in over drive and I’ll have the phone in one hand and laptop in the other, whipping up a frenzy calling all suitable artists and performers to get involved!

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

‘If your names on the bullet it will get you wherever you are’ Those were my Granddad’s dying words to me. I was 14 and just about to go on my first serious travel to Egypt. I live my life by these words. What a man he was!

What would your three wishes be?

1) I wish I had hundreds and hundreds more costumes, big hats little hats, all kinds of wigs, a million different gloves, a girl can never have enough shoes, oh and a few more glittery knickers please!
2) I wish I had an agent or a manager.
3) I wish the above wishes come true soon!

Make sure to check out the FAF Arts website and you can follow Belle Du Voir herself on Facebook.

Rebecca Lennox

We get to know Rebecca, an administrator from Perth, Australia!

Enough about me, I want to get to know you guys. Welcome to a new feature, where I'll be chatting to my subscribers and finding out all about them.

Rebecca started subscribing to me a long time ago, after reading early issues of Snippets. She lives in Perth, Western Australia and works in administration. She loves The Wizard Of Oz, Fiona Apple and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Her favourite possession is her art wall and her favourite colour is red.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was little I wanted to be a dancer, or a dance teacher. I've lived some of my dreams already and I'm actually in the process of making new ones right now.

I ran a craft store in partnership with my Mum for a number of years, which was both amazing and difficult. I love the challenges and responsibility of running your own business, so I'm sure I'll end up following that path again - I have a wedding stationery business which is waiting for some more attention from me, but I've just had some big changes in my life and I think I'm going to do some travelling before I settle down. At the moment anything is possible.

Where should we visit if we come to your town?

Perth is a laid back little city, so firstly, don't expect the hustle and bustle of a big city. My top 5 places to go in Perth would be:

  1. The Naked Fig - My fave place to eat. It's right on the beach so the view are amazing. The food is delicious with lots of vegan and healthy options. My friend and I like to take a long walk/run along the coast (there's a footpath) and then come back to the Fig for lunch. It's the perfect Sunday.

  2. Perth Cultural Centre / William Street - This is the home of Perth's art gallery, museum and main library. It's easy to lose time here. There's often events or markets in the space between the three, and William Street is home to little boutiques and galleries and pop up shops.

  3. Leederville - Luna Cinemas is the 'arthouse' cinema group of Perth, showing independent and foreign films. After watching a film, grab something yummy from one of the cafes or restaurants on Oxford St, and visit Oxford St Books (books), Black Plastic (gifts etc) and Urban Records (gifts and music).

  4. Fremantle - Op Shops, cafes, and markets.

  5. Mount Lawley - Beaufort Street is home to bars, restaurants, boutiques and Planet, a video library/video store/music store/clothing store/cafe.

"I've lived some of my dreams already and I'm actually in the process of making new ones right now"

Where do you look for inspiration?

I've always had a very active imagination, so inspiration has never been a problem for me, quite the opposite - I usually have trouble narrowing down the ideas and choosing which to follow through with. Sometimes you just have to start - once the hands are inky, everything flows.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

Happiness is a choice. Every moment you have a choice to change something about your current circumstances, even if it's just your attitude. You are responsible for your own happiness.

What would your three wishes be?

  1. To remove fear & anxiety - I think that people are so held back from happiness, truth and creativity because they're scared - as we grow up the monsters under our bed are replaced with the ones in our heads and they keep us awake at night, make us sick and stop us from saying what we really mean.

  2. Infinite resources and time. I want thousands of years to sit in great libraries learning as much as my brain will hold. Enough money to live comfortably, see the world, be able to take every opportunity that comes my way and enjoy myself doing it.

  3. The power to create anything I can imagine with a cute nose wiggle or the click of my fingers.

Make sure to check out Rebecca's website.
