What’s a Shawshank Redemption? Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Today was the Estethica press day at the Mayfair Hotel, so Emma and I went along super early for a snoop around. It’s a showcase for designers who work with sustainable products, including Christopher Raeburn from Project Catwalk. I had already seen most of the designs at Fashion Week but Junky Styling had a really pretty skirt that I want. It didn’t take as long as we were expecting but we did get goodie bags when we left.

Afterwards we went for a snoop around Vivienne Westwood, Emma fell in love with a pair of £500 boots and I got tempted to try on the horns. Emma still couldn’t work out what a Shawshank Redemption was.

Afterwards we went to the Tatty Devine press day at their new (not open to the public yet) store in Covent Garden. The Summer collection has a seaside and tearoom theme and there’s an awesome bunting necklace I want. They gave us red doily-inspired rings in our goodie bags and I couldn’t resist buying a 3D glasses necklace with the 20% discount.

It started raining, so we went for an educational trip around the Science Museum, where we discovered that Emma has a woman’s brain. Apparently you can have sleepovers in the museum, so we want to have an all night birthday party there.

After stopping off at Hummingbird, we headed home for lunch, where Tom and Sean (the no.3 person under 30 to watch according to The Sunday Time) were hard at work on Drowned In Sound. We may have annoyed them by watching Limmy and Adam & Joe, while eating cupcakes (chocolate & chai = yum!) and offering everyone beer.

In the evening, Tom took me to a Facebook Developer Garage, which was quite interesting but after getting up at 6.30 with only 3 hours of sleep, I started dozing off.

cover

It’s been another busy weekend. We launched the Horror Issue of Snippets with Amanda Palmer on the cover. I can’t believe we’re already on issue 17!

snippets

I ordered some Moo cards for Snippets and they arrived on Saturday. There’s four different colours and I’ve already given out a few.

icecream

On Friday, we went for more ice cream from The Icecreamists at Selfridges. We had vouchers for rose ice cream cones, but the nice man let us choose which flavors we wanted and we got to try lots of types, including black licorice Vogue flavor and a really strong espresso. In the evening, Sean invited us to the pub, where a bunch of people from the DiS boards were having a meet-up. We got to meets lots of lovely people, including a band called Internet Forever, and I now vaguely understand the rules of darts.

centralperk

On Saturday, we had vouchers for free coffee from Central Perk, a pop-up Friend’s cafe in Soho (photo by Nick Burcher). We met up with Lynsey, Claire and Andrew and headed along, but the queue ended up being way too long. It did look quite cool though, so we’ll try again on Wednesday. Amazingly, Tom has never seen Friends, so I’ll have to show him an episode beforehand.

foxtons

On the way home, we spotted two foxes playing around in the grass at Little Venice. They were really cute and not very timid at all.

Today we went for brunch with Martyn at Plan 9, who’s down visiting for the weekend.

seancake

This weekend was lots of fun. It was Sean’s birthday on Saturday, so his friend who owns a pub near Hammersmith had opened up especially for him, and we sat next to the fire feeling sleepy and eating birthday cake. I got to meet some interesting people from record labels, one said he even liked CO+K. Rob who works at DiS and his girlfriend ended up getting stranded, so they stayed over at ours and went for breakfast at Plan 9 on Sunday morning.

The cafe was so busy that we sat at a table outside, under heater fans with blankets, and ate breakfast of French toast and an Oreo cookie milkshake. It was actually really cosy sitting outside in the cold, cuddled up under blankets.

Tom and I went sale shopping and ended up in Las Iguanas in Soho, a very cheesy Latin chain-restaurant which plays the most cliche Latin-themed music. We had tapas and lots of lots of cocktails. Tony joined us and we had even more cocktails before heading up to Islington to see Mark Thomas.

We sat front row and drank cups of tea while watching Marky T be very funny and counter the worst hecklers ever.
