What’s a Shawshank Redemption? Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Screen shot 2009-11-13 at 18.11.47

Today was the Estethica press day at the Mayfair Hotel, so Emma and I went along super early for a snoop around. It’s a showcase for designers who work with sustainable products, including Christopher Raeburn from Project Catwalk. I had already seen most of the designs at Fashion Week but Junky Styling had a really pretty skirt that I want. It didn’t take as long as we were expecting but we did get goodie bags when we left.

Afterwards we went for a snoop around Vivienne Westwood, Emma fell in love with a pair of £500 boots and I got tempted to try on the horns. Emma still couldn’t work out what a Shawshank Redemption was.

Afterwards we went to the Tatty Devine press day at their new (not open to the public yet) store in Covent Garden. The Summer collection has a seaside and tearoom theme and there’s an awesome bunting necklace I want. They gave us red doily-inspired rings in our goodie bags and I couldn’t resist buying a 3D glasses necklace with the 20% discount.

plane

It started raining, so we went for an educational trip around the Science Museum, where we discovered that Emma has a woman’s brain. Apparently you can have sleepovers in the museum, so we want to have an all night birthday party there.

cupcaje

After stopping off at Hummingbird, we headed home for lunch, where Tom and Sean (the no.3 person under 30 to watch according to The Sunday Time) were hard at work on Drowned In Sound. We may have annoyed them by watching Limmy and Adam & Joe, while eating cupcakes (chocolate & chai = yum!) and offering everyone beer.

In the evening, Tom took me to a Facebook Developer Garage, which was quite interesting but after getting up at 6.30 with only 3 hours of sleep, I started dozing off.

catkidston

I was sent a copy of Cath Kidston’s new book Sew! which comes with all the materials needed to make the bag on the cover. We’re doing a contest to win the book on CO+K, if anyone fancies a copy.

bag

My new sewing machine was a dream to work with, so the bag came together very quickly! I’m calling it my Cat Kidston bag. There are currently 4 sewing machines in the Mews at the moment, I could start a sweatshop.

postcard

We got a postcard from Raven, who’s back in the US. She had an amazing WWF wrestler halloween costume. We miss her so much, but if everything goes smoothly, we’ll be flying out to see her in New Orleans for Mardis Gras in February.

ilona-blk

I got a Tatty Devine cat bracelet which I love. It’s like the one in the photo but blue.

Things on CO+K are going really well. We’ve got a new publicist called Sally, who’s going to be trying to get us in to all the UK press and we’ve got talks with an advertising agency on Monday, so it’s all super exciting!

All aboard the good ship… Sunday, August 30th, 2009

quilt

I’ve almost finished my quilt, I’m just waiting for the batting I ordered to arrive and then I can sew it on the back. I’ve had an alright week, mainly recovering from the party, hanging out with friends and going to the cinema. It turns out that Raven did have swine flu and, even though we had all been hanging out with her, none of us caught it.

smoothie

Yesterday, we went for a slap-up lunch at Plan 9. They make amazing smoothies with names like berry-go-round, cardio angel and acai dream. Tamara Beckwith was there drinking one too. It turns out that lots of stars live near us, including Jude Law, Natalie Imbruglia, Bjork, Kiera Knightly and Sienna Miller.

ash

Tom’s brother Jack has come to stay, so we picked him up from the station and went to see our friend, Ashxyz play at the Good Ship. Amy, who was one of my friends in high school was there, so it was fun catching up after years and years and sharing Vegetarian cafe tips (note to self: got to check out Pogo Cafe for banana, honey & rice milk shakes).

tatty

I also bought some new Tatty Devine jewelry in the sale with my birthday money – a huge zip brooch and a heart-shaped glasses necklace.

Party time in the Mews… Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

makeover

For my birthday, Tom gave ma a gift voucher for MAC, where I got to go along and have a makeover and then get the products they used.

mac

It took an hour and a half to do but the makeup artist was really nice. She let me pick out all the colours I wanted. I felt very dolled up for 12pm but I had my sunglasses to hide behind.

icecreamcupcake

After that we headed to Bust Magazine’s Craftacular in Bethnal Green, where they had a vintage tearoom selling ice cream cone cupcakes. The place was very very busy.

tatty devine

I have a problem at craft fairs of not buying anything, because I know I could make it all, but I did buy some charms from Tatty Devine. They  had a table set up and were trying to break the world record for most charms on a bracelet.

charms

I wish I had bought loads more, but I love the three I went for.

friends

After that it was party time, so we stocked up on snacks and supplies and headed home to blow up balloons. Everyone started arriving.

cake

Lynsey made us an awesome percy pig cake, it was super chocolatey and delicious!

pressies

She also made us a photo frame (tutorial here). Sean and Catherine brought a DiS tote bag filled with goodies including a mouse cheese grater, wine, a Bright Eyes record, a book about New Media Art, and an awesome guitar-shaped ice cube mould (see below). Tony brought super cute hugging salt and pepper shakers. Alex brought a bag of crafty goodies, silly string, candy and games, and Ash and Morgan had made us super cute bunting to decorate with.

guitarice

The guitar ice cubes looked awesome the next day.

friends2

There was lots of beer, karaoke, cake and playing buzz. I stole this cute photo of Emma, Raven and Tony from Raven’s Facebook.

partyhats

There were also party hats, but maybe a bit too much alcohol for a kid’s party.

badgenose

And Tom made Cat Morley badges and Raven decided to pierce her one into her nose.

beer

Today, I haven’t felt too great and looking at our recycling, it’s easy to see why. We got subs to make us feel better and then Tom had a very long chat on the phone with Ben Kweller.

I think being 24 is going to be fun!

In full bloom, or should I say broom… Friday, July 24th, 2009

maidavale

Maida Vale tube station has been turned in to a garden. They had been asking people to donate their unwanted plants, so that they could win the best tube station award, and I think they’re on to a winner. On the topic of gardens, our hanging baskets have started to bloom.

Picture 2

I interviewed the awesome Gala Darling for the new issue of Snippets, which is almost complete and should be out soon. I’ve been listening to calming sounds of the ocean on my iPhone to help me sleep, but every now and again there’s a loud wave crashing on the rocks, which wakes me up.

sins

Duncan came to visit for a night this week and we got to introduce him to most of our neighbours. Also, we finally made it to London Stone (it’s only open in the week because it’s in the City). It has awesome tacky gothic decor and is filled with business men. We had two of the Seven Deadly Sin Cocktails – Sloth & Envy.

sewingbox

Tom got me some early birthday presents, including this awesome mini sewing box and a London Roller Girl’s roller skate necklace from Tatty Devine. I’m secretly hoping someone buys my a real pair.

The teaches of Peaches… Saturday, June 27th, 2009

cigarbox

This gorgeous cigar box from Ori-Janel arrived this morning. Janel sent it to say thank you and it’s soooo pretty. I love the handle.

peaches

We headed over to Tatty Devine on Brick Lane to see Peaches today. She was signing records and jewelry boxes.

peaches-logo-full

The customized necklaces look pretty cool.

cocktail

Afterwards we went for a cocktail and I managed to spill my one all over myself :( It was far too hot today and the paper said it could be 35 degrees next week!

We had sushi in the park and then bought an awesome new camera lanyard, from Covent Garden. We saw the girl from The Real Hustle in the street and made sure she hadn’t picked our pockets. I wanted to pop in to Lush and pick up some shower gel but the staff were determined to stop me and have a conversation about my bag / necklace / outfit, so I decided to leave it and order some from Ocado.

lightening

On the way home a storm started and Tom said I couldn’t take a photo of it in a million years. Here are the only two shots I took, both with lightening in them. Yay!

sheep

We were at a conference a couple of weeks ago where the guy from Unto This Last, an awesome furniture store on Brick Lane, was demonstrating their manufacturing process. They cut pieces of furniture from huge sheets of wood, but they don’t like any going to waste, so they cut little animals and other shapes from the excess (a bit like me with shrink plastic). We got a cute set of sheep.

newhair

I had an appointment at Taylor Taylor this morning, where a lovely French man chopped up my hair and gave me a sweeping fringe, which is great because I hate my forehead. He was impressed by my DIY highlights.

tattydevine

After that I headed to the press day at Tatty Devine, where I got to preview the new collection and chat to the lovely staff. There was a pair of pearly queen earrings in my goodie bag, which I love and hope I’m allowed to post a photo of – they don’t come out until September.

I completely forgot to blog about the April Fool that Tom played on me yesterday. There’s a designer on the net who’s also called Cat Morley and Tom set my domain, catmorley.com to forward to her website so that I would think I hadn’t renewed it. I wasn’t fooled but I thought it was clever.
